Illegal Street Racing

The following is a guest blog courtesy of Dolan Law Offices in Chicago. The number of auto accidents and related fatalities that occur each year continues to rise, and protecting ourselves from reckless and dangerous drivers become more difficult. In the last several years, the number of personal injury cases related to the dangerous practice of street racing throughout the United States has increased the risks associated with driving and crossing our roads.

This reckless activity that is usually associated with youth has in fact seen individuals of all ages, genders and socio-economic groups prosecuted for this thoughtless and dangerous crime.

Recently, 25 individuals in the Laguna area in Orange County were arrested for street racing. Hopefully, this is an indication that this problem is being taken seriously by the police. However, remaining proactive, both as drivers and pedestrians, remains critical to our safety. It is also important that those involved in street racing are held responsible, both criminally and civilly, for their actions.

Danger on Our Roadways

The momentary thrill of street racing is never worth the consequences.
In California, the punishment for street racing includes penalties such as

  • Minimum jail sentence of 24 hours and maximum of 90 days
  • Vehicle impoundment for at least 30 days
  • Owner responsibility for vehicle's towing and storage charges
  • Vehicle sold at a lien sale if fees and fines not paid

  • These penalties are just for the first offense. However, if you are involved in an auto accident as a result of street racing and it has led to a serious injury or even the death of a loved one, the penalties for the offender can even be more serious. Anyone who aids or abets a street race can also face a maximum of a 90-day jail sentence. If you have seen a street race or suspect that street racing is going on in your area, immediately notify the police. If you or someone you know has been injured as a result of street racing then you need to contact a personal injury lawyer to protect you rights. Dolan Law Offices, P.C. is a firm of Illinois Personal Injury Lawyers committed to fighting for full and fair compensation for auto accident injury victims.
